Is there a way of checking if my CRD has had this modification carried out?

By mod i assume you mean leaving the flaps in place and fitting a resistor in place of the motor to fool the ECM into believing a motor is fitted ?

If thats what you mean its just a case of lifting the plastic engine cover, removing the turbo inlet pipe and checking to see if the swirl motor is plugged in, or if a resistor has been fitted to the electrical connector in place of the motor. ( I think theirs only one electrical connector under this pipe if i remember correctly.)
Its not possible to see if the flaps have sprung back to their default position,but theyvwould unless they have siezed., which isnt very common.
