Yesterday on my way home from work, I go to change lanes to pass another car and all of a sudden it felt like the trans jumped into neutral and the car started to slow down. The MIL engine light came on. I give it some gas, the rpm jumps up but no accelaration. I double check the shifter is still in Drive. Luckily I was able to turn into a side street, shut the car off and restarted. Eerything seems to be working fine now but the engine light is still on. Made an appointment to
take it in on Moday.

Please keep us informed on to what is the cause for this. Did your car die or anything?
No, the car did not stall. I would try to accelerate and only the RPM's would go up. I stopped, restarted and now everything seems normal. Only the MIL light remains on.

I hope Chrysler figures out their electronics problems.

Mercedes has been losing market share because they have not been able to solve their quality problems, primarily due to electronics problems.

Here is a pic I just created to symbolize our woes :(
I can always count on you for a good laugh.

You should have tried going to autostick or shifting to neutral and then back to drive...it sucks though, good luck and keep us posted.

On this transmission, if it goes into neutral and then back to drive at any speed above 25 mph, it will not re-engage until you are under 25 mph.

Scared the hell out of me the first time it happened. It revs up to 4000 rpm -but no engagement. My car was new and I thought the autostick worked like my 300M. It does not.

Engine light came on as well. the next day, it was off and all was well.

I was trying to go from autostick to drive when it happened and hit neutral instead. Didn't know that if you slap the stick to the right it will go up through the gears to fourth - then to drive on the next slap.

I had this happen to me once as well. I had punched hard, and had to let off the gas because of a car changing lanes into mine. I then punched it again to get around
the guy and the engine free rev right into the red. I coasted to a side street and
Shut down the car. After it restarted the check engine light was on but the car ran fine..
The next morning the check engine light was still on so I cleared it..
Turn the key to the last position (1 click before the starter engages) and all the way off
Three times quickly..
It most likely clears every thing out as well.(error codes). but it turned off the check engine light. (this was in Apr of last year and the dealers couldn’t even change the oil in a Hemi, so I wasn’t concerned about keeping the error codes.)
I think this might just be a self preservation mode.. to protect the drive shaft and rear end from too much windup. (The Hemi puts out a good amount of torque…)
Any thought on this ??

I started the car earlier and now the engine light is off and all seems normal.

I still have an appointment to take it in on Monday. I will have them check the codes to see if anything is stored. I also have the radiator bracket recall to take care of.

I think you've nailed it. Self protection for the tranny from us "sometimes abusive" owners. Not a flaw. Part of the design.

My wife has had this happen twice. The 2nd time it happened was last Thursday night and the car set a code. I had her drop it off at the dealer and the code was a p0730 (incorrect gear ratio error). The invoice from the dealer says they programmed the power train module to new part # 4896415AH. Does anyone know if this part number corresponds with the program version as seen in the EVIC? The EVIC says the current program is version 6.1. I believe this is the version the car has always had since it arrived at the dealer 1/5/05. I had never checked the software version prior to the repair.
Jerry M., I would be intrested to hear if your car set the same code and what the dealer does.

I spoke to the service rep yesterday, and he informed me that after talking to DC they were told to replace the PCM

They have to order the PCM and because of the holiday it won't be in until Monday or Tuesday, So my car will be spending Easter weekend at the dealer.

I will find out what error code was set. I asked the service rep, but he said he didn't have the paperwork in front of him when I called.

That has NOT been my experience.
Admittedly, the tranny is slow to re-engage if you drop it into neutral and then back into drive, but it has not failed to re-engage at any speed.
Just takes a moment.

I assume you got a rental car, right?

Yes, the service rep said that all of the dealer cars were loaned out, so they hooked me up with Enterprise right down the street. A guy from Enterprise came and picked me up and took me to their office. They gave me a Chevy Silverado pickup  .

It happened to me three times on the same trip home from work. When I got on it it was like it shut down, but ran normal under normal conditions. I took it right to the dealer. Needed to replace the PCM. Had a loaner (2005 Sebring) for six days (over a weekend) until the part came in

Update

Finally got my car back today (it's been at the dealer since 3-21-05)

Took care of the Radiator Bracket recall, and the PCM was replaced.

There was a P2638 code present (PCM not processing torque management requests) All wiring and connectors inspected and found to be ok. Diagnostic test procedure indicated internal PCM problem.

New PCM installed, programmed, and road tested. The car is running great now.

Transmission slips into Neutral, CODE P0730

:eek:uch:

Car has not yet had the problem again (since the reprogram).

I'm having this same problem with my Magnum RT, 5 times now and have almost gotten creamed by a cement truck the last time. The dealer can't figure out why I am tripping the P0730 incorrect gear ratio code. They won't change out my TCM module unless they can recreate the problem. Isn't that dandy. Keep my car for 2000 miles and put the Tech in Danger as well! I know that JBS 11 is having problem with his SRT-8 as well.

My dealer said they called the 5 Star Hotline and that this problem has not been reported before. Well, that seems like BS since there are multiple people on the LX forum and Charger forum that have had the same problem. Why must they deny that this is a serious, possibly life threatening problem. :eek:uch:
