I changed the fluid and filter in my wife's 07 AWD on Tuesday, I added a drain plug as well for convenience. When I drained it and removed the old filter, 4 quarts came out, so that is what I put back in. Wednesday I checked the fluid level and it was slightly low so I added a half quart which topped it off. Today I put it back on the stands, drained and filled it again so the majority of fluid would be new. 4 quarts came out again so that is what I put back and it is completely full. The only thing I can figure is the new filter is holding the extra 16oz in and above it because there are no leaks.

To accurately check the transmission fluid level, you need to use the procedure outlined in the Factory Service Manual. The way you've done it is pretty good for getting you in the ball park though. FYI, when the transmission is fully warmed up to about 160-170* (in cold weather it could take up to 30 miles or so), the level should read right at 65 mm on a properly marked dipstick.
