I was looking at a pre owned 300 for my wife.

Its a 2004 model with only 2600 miles.

The interior is pretty worn and to me it looks more like 26000 miles than 2600.

Is the mileage only stored in the instrument cluster or is there a "backup" somewhere else?

Thanks!

I think it is extremely hard to tamper with the new electronic odometers, but I don't know the answer to your specific question.

One thing you could do is take the VIN to a dealer and see if there are any warranty service records on that car....that would show the mileage those services were performed.

Was it in a rental fleet possibly? That might explain the higher than normal wear even if the mileage is legit?

There are three mileage counters.
2 trip counters, and 1 for the total mileage which cannot be changed.
Press the plastic reset button 3 times. The mileage counter with the most miles is the total life-to-date.

I know in the SRT-4, which also runs the NGC PCM, the displayed mileage is stored in the cluster module, but the PCM also keeps a record. I'll bet its the same setup.
