I had a look in Halfords today.
They have premium quality Bosch batteries with a 5 year warranty.

The correct battery for the 5.7 is HSB110

The diesel and SRT8 battery is HSB019, this is a bigger battery but it is actually £10 cheaper.

I can get a much cheaper battery from the motorfactors, but it probably won't last very long. I can't get a quality Bosch or Varta from any of the local motorfactors, people don't want to pay for them.

What battery should I get, I was thinking of the quality Bosch battery and getting the bigger diesel / SRT8 size. I think the good battery will last longer, and I want to change the original before it lets me down some day.

Any good advice taken on board.

I have looked online but most won't ship to Northern Ireland, it's to do with shipping batteries with couriers.

I know that Halfords are £20-£30 dearer, but the store is 2 miles away and if I do have a warranty problem it's easy to take it back. If I buy on line and it goes duff, I probable just have to suck it up.

Hi Torian, the Optima's arn't widely available around here. I know a few people who have used them in classic cars, some say they don't last too well either and they arn't stock sizes, so some issues with leads and mounting securely etc.

I recently purchased a Halfords HB110 battery for my Audi A4 1.9TDi. Although only sold with 3 yrs warranty, it was replacing a similar Halfords battery which had lasted 5 yrs. Like ivanford, I appreciate the convenience of buying locally in the event of having to return a 20 Kg battery for any reason.

Fairy snuff. I'd forgotten that you were in NI. BTW Most of the batteries I've bought are from Halfords. I've taken one back so far because it died after being left uncharged for over a year. They replaced it without quibble.

If you use quidco and have your credit card registered with them, you'll get 4.5% cashback on Halfords in-store purchases, which lessens the pain slightly.

Not sure if you have a local branch because at this moment, Eurocarparts doing 15% discount on batteries if you shop online for collection or delivery. Don't think the promo is not available over the counter though, you have to order through their website and payment on collection or in advance. They also do the Bosch battery :)

Just a quick check on prices for the following battery, Bosch S5 110.

Halfrauds £139.99
Eurocarparts £89.71 (with promotion code: BATTERY15)
ebay £93.54 (cheapest item with free delivery, item no. 300631380290)

Hope it helps :)

(ps Bosch Silver Car Battery 110 is listed for the 5.7)

When comparing batteries don't just look at the Ah. Also compare the cold cranking amps. This is what you need for stronger starting from cold.

my fault, I badly expressed myself....what I was trying to discover was what we should look for i.e how do I, without knowledge of the subject, know what is a good figure / bad figure? .... is 730A a lot, or not much? If its mediocre, what figure would be a recommended minimum to ensure good winter performance? Mine is 730A and I havent suffered any issues, but if (when) I swap it, I may as well get the meatiest I can find

OK gotchya, yes my old battery was 730A too,so really a bigger one will be better but on petrols we don't need as much cranking as diesels (glow plugs and compression, etc.,)my new battery is 760A,it's not mediocre but you don't want to go lower
