"Jeep Prices Porsche-Slaying SRT8 Grand Cherokee

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 will cost about half as much as the Porsche Cayenne Turbo it beats in a 0-60 run, the Chrysler Group said in a release on Thursday. The new HEMI-powered SUV will sport a base price tag of $39,995 when it goes on sale in January. The SRT8 version of Jeep's perennially popular sport-ute will outpace the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and BMW X5, Jeep promises. Outfitted with the 420-hp, 6.1-liter HEMI V-8, the SRT8 will gun to 60 mph in less than five seconds, making it the second-fastest Chrysler Group vehicle after the Dodge Viper. Along with an upgraded four-wheel-drive system and the HEMI engine, the SRT8 gets stability control recalibrated specifically for this application, Brembo brakes, a more refined interior and options like DVD navigation and Sirius satellite radio."

Faster to xxx mph only???

Seriously, who would be comfortable driving the jeep at sustained speeds over 150, much less 170 mph? I know I'd be a bit worried.

Hey KEV, your link doesn't work, but according to some articles I've read, including this post by ekool back in March, the jeep is "only" 415hp... wonder why the discrepancy?
I also wonder what the point is, but ooookay :wink1:

I am not comfortable above 90 in my C (Non SRT), no way I would put a Jeep up there.......
Is it because of the speed, or the potential for jail time?? :silly:

Gear-ratio, gear-ratio, gear-ratio.
i doubt gear ratio is the primary factor; it's the AWD that's gonna make the 0-60 go so quick...top speed and 'on-a-roll' acceleration will be slower than the SRT-8, since it weighs a crapload more...

Well what did you expect??? It's geared with AWD.

And like someone else pointed out, quicker....not faster. ;)

BTW: In my mere 235HP 4000lb '00 Dakota pickup I can beat most any car 0-40.....Sounds stupid right? Well, in the "4 wheel-drive low" setting I can lay rubber on all four tires. Once you hit 40mph the transfer case disenages because the RPM's of the low gear inside are too high....I only bring this up to point out that gearing is everything from 0-60.

Above 60, it'll be no contest.

vvv90, glad to see your back! Been a few weeks since you've posted. How's the new job?

Be cool if the transfer case shifted automatically to 2 wheel high as fast as the transmission did, be pretty wild.
I had a friend years ago that shoved a 327 into a chevy luv truck with the original rear end. Scream is an understatement up to 60 mph.

Jobs good, but surprisingly slow today...hence the reason for my presence. :D

I thought the same thing. If you could shift the transfer case you could get mid 4's in the 0-60 times in a 235HP dakota....THAT would shock a few people.

AWD...the primary reason my soon-to-be-sold 2001 S4 with 320-hp embarrasses new corvettes at the stoplights...and why i won't race them from a roll!

I was speaking to one of the engineers at Chrysler and he told me the jeep had a more restrictive exhaust, a looser converter and a taller gear ratio. he said while testing in the summer heat of arizona the jeeps were turning consistant 12.80's V.S. the chargers srt8's 13.20's.
