The new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 will cost about half as much as the Porsche Cayenne Turbo it beats in a 0-60 run, the Chrysler Group said in a release on Thursday. The new HEMI-powered SUV will sport a base price tag of $39,995 when it goes on sale in January. The SRT8 version of Jeep's perennially popular sport-ute will outpace the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and BMW X5, Jeep promises. Seriously, who would be comfortable driving the jeep at sustained speeds over 150, much less 170 mph? I know I'd be a bit worried.

I am not comfortable above 90 in my C (Non SRT), no way I would put a Jeep up there. To 60 is an old benchmark, hard to believe with all that weight it will be faster even with gearing.

i doubt gear ratio is the primary factor; it's the AWD that's gonna make the 0-60 go so quick...top speed and 'on-a-roll' acceleration will be slower than the SRT-8, since it weighs a crapload more...

BTW: In my mere 235HP 4000lb '00 Dakota pickup I can beat most any car 0-40.....Sounds stupid right? Well, in the "4 wheel-drive low" setting I can lay rubber on all four tires. Once you hit 40mph the transfer case disenages because the RPM's of the low gear inside are too high....I only bring this up to point out that gearing is everything from 0-60.

Above 60, it'll be no contest.

Be cool if the transfer case shifted automatically to 2 wheel high as fast as the transmission did, be pretty wild.
I had a friend years ago that shoved a 327 into a chevy luv truck with the original rear end. Scream is an understatement up to 60 mph.

0-60 and the race is about half over. The Jeep will die a slow death against a 300 SRT-8 in the 1/4 and higher. It has 5hp less and weighs alot more.

I thought the same thing. If you could shift the transfer case you could get mid 4's in the 0-60 times in a 235HP dakota....THAT would shock a few people.

I was speaking to one of the engineers at Chrysler and he told me the jeep had a more restrictive exhaust, a looser converter and a taller gear ratio. he said while testing in the summer heat of arizona the jeeps were turning consistant 12.80's V.S. the chargers srt8's 13.20's.
