Well get a look at this......

First off, I don't know why I just learned this (if these stats are true that is) because I'm such a car nut I should know these things, but a fellow forum member PM'd me about bench marking the SRT-8's performance against the likes of the AMG family and I came across this:

http://www.fast-autos.net/mercedes/03mercedese55.html

GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY!!!!

So let me get this straight....The similarly weighted, but only 16 more HP (if you consider the SRT-8 is underrated at 450HP which I believe it is) but a little more significantly out torqued E55 AMG does 12.5 in the QT BONE STOCK!!!!

The SRT-8's that are supercharged and injected with nitrous at around 500RWHP don't run this times.

So what gives? I can only say the E55 AMG is Also EXTREEEEMELY underrated.

What say you?

The whole AMG lineup is pretty ridiculous. The CL/SL are rockets with unreal amounts of torque, and the E is just pissed off quick. The Merc's are probably pretty underrated, but the level of quality has slipped somewhat over the past few years. Ridiculous amount of recalls lately and they are still REALLY expensive...............I'd still be proud to own one though.......

FYI: the E55 wagon runs it just as fast

The biggest difference I'm seeing that the mercedes has, and a stock srt-8 doesn't have as far as performance numbers,is the critical 0-60 numbers. Mercedes 0-60 in 4.3,srt-8 0-60 is more like 4.9-5 seconds. That all the difference in the world for getting some decent #'s going down the track. Now if we can only consistantly lower our 0-60 times.....

Suspension and tires will get you there easily.
It's all in the 60' times.
18x10 with a 315/30-18 drag radial would make a huge difference but you'll have to step down in wheel size to make it happen.
:(
To give you an idea, my Impala with 335/30-18 Pilot sports on the back runs 1.90 60' but runs 1.70's on ET Streets. For every .1 in the 60's you gain .2 in the 1/4 mile.

My wife and I just test drove a SLK 55 AMG the other day. This is a normally aspirated V8 AMG engine, but the car felt very solid and very fast. Since it was only 1 drive, I cannot give my feeling on under/over rated, but it felt very fast. The 7 speed tranny adds to some of this, so it would take some time in the seat to figure. Not sure of its weight, but it would easily out run our SRT-8 Magnum. It is on the short list for our next fun car.

I lined up with a 04 E55 several times. The car left solid, none or minimal tire spin. (left the srt8 like i was asleep). I think the computer and tranny have alot to do with this. I know if our cars left with minimal tire spin and no torque management, even more timing i think we would see mid 12 second runs.

Back in the early 90's when we were all runnin our Turbocharged Buicks real hard, it seem like for years someone was finding small modifications that made more and more power to those little 6's. Now you get a near bone stock with minimal mods into the low 12's high 11's. What im getting at is, im thinking we will see major improvements in acceleration when someone gets into the computers of our cars and do some minor mods.

I agree with you..............but you referring to a turbo charged car is not fair really considering upping the boost makes an ass load of power. :silly:

Matt I think yours is more like this isn't it?

EXACTLY!!! How did you find such a "picture perfect" vision of what a sports car is supposed to be? :silly:

Hey Damon! I'm going to the track this weekend in Rockford....Byron Dragway...are you game???...I asked Eric if he's going to Wood fire (which I'd be willing to go to) but he said: "I wanna rest this weekend."

PFFFT....he sounds like me now....What say you?

In the September Motor Trend magazine they tested the E55 wagon verses the SRT8 Magnum. The E55 ran 12.2 at 113.8(also printed 12.3 elsewhere in the article, not sure which is correct). That's crazy fast for the typical 50-60 year old empty nesters that buy those.
