ABS + ESP BAS and traction control warning lights ON after the battery went completely flat- DTC code U140E

My 2008 V6 300C (LE) was in storage and the old battery went completely flat. After installing a brand new battery, the ABS, ESP BAS and Traction Control warning lights stay on.
I took it to Wanneroo Chrysler and they carried out a diagnostic test – “Found ABS module fault codes in system, checked ABS module wiring harness -ok. Reprogramed ABS, still there is error. ABS doesn’t configurate. Possible internal faults in ABS module. Recommend to replace ABS module first and test again”.
DTC code -U140E, ABS implausible vehicle configuration data received.
Cost of module would be $1,300!

I told them, no way, everything was fine before the battery went flat.
I came home and searched the internet, sure enough, this was a common issue with some model 300’s.
I took it to Osborne Park Chrysler and they cleared the code straight away! Their report stated “carried out dtc scan and found abs system received inplausable information, carried out reconfiguration of bcm and road test ok”
I give 10/10 to Osborne Park and 0/10 to Wanneroo.

Before I took it to Osborne Park, I bought my own scanner – MaxiDiag Elite MD802. With that scanner I could not permanently clear the U140E code or lights.
From a downloaded 2007 LX service manual -
I tried the “BATTERY SYSTEM STANDARD PROCEDURE – BATTERY RECONNECTION”
I tried the “ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM” – calibrate the Steering Angle Sensor”
I tried the “ABS VERIFICATION TEST”
Nothing I tried worked so that’s when I took it to Osborne Park.

I hope the above will help some forum member in the future; all because of a flat battery.

The symptoms described can occur just by disconnecting the battery for a significant time. I experienced a similar problem when replacing an old battery with a new one and, in addition, lost the radio code and disabled the one-shot windows operation. The warning lights re-set automatically after driving a short distance and there is a simple procedure for re-setting windows operation - all explained in Owner's Manual. The duration of power loss does appear to be significant, as when I recently disconnected the battery for a short time to replace the glowplug module, there were no problems after re-connection. The U140E code can be set just by having low battery volts.

Hi devilmaycare
Unfortunately for me, driving any distance didn’t reset the warning lights no matter what I tried with the scanner or what procedure I followed.
Regarding ABS issues and the U140E code, it may appear -
If the Anti-Lock Brakes Module either fails to receive vehicle configuration data from the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or the configuration data it receives from the ECM or PCM is different than that received during the previous ignition cycle.

Possible Causes
WIRING HARNESS, TERMINAL, CONNECTOR DAMAGE
DTCs RELATED TO BATTERY VOLTAGE, IGNITION, OR VIN MESSAGES
CAN C BUS CIRCUITS OPEN OR SHORTED
ECM OR PCM DTCs PRESENT
ECM OR PCM NOT PROGRAMMED OR PROGRAMMED WITH INCORRECT VIN
ECM OR PCM
ANTI-LOCK BRAKES MODULE

Yes, Im sure the garage just cleared the Warning lights with associated DTC's. There was nothing wrong with the ABS system.
When the lights are ON all it means is the system is disabled, so there was no discernable difference in the way the car drove. It just meant you only had normal brake system without ABS. You could drive forever like that.

That's what I thought. When I had a similar problem after swapping batteries, the car drove as normal until the warning lights extinguished automatically. I never had a chance beforehand to scan for DTCs, so I don't know if one was set and then cleared. I believe your particular problem may have been due to the length of time of battery outage. I understand your comment on driving without ABS, as in all the time I've had my 300C, I've never been aware of the ABS kicking in, but then I've never been in a situation where that could happen; eg in emergency braking on a slippery surface. It has happened once to me (in 23 yrs!) in my Audi A4 and the ABS did prevent me skidding in what might have been a dangerous situation. I suppose the only way to test ABS operation safely would be on a skid pan.

Hi Dear

my car was same way left and battery flat. Now it shows same error U140E. The interesting is that i took it to original chrysler dealer in new zealand and they told me same error.
But my car runs smoothly---

-CRUISE control works fine
-NO brakes fail
-ESP is fine.

May be just computer error like yours ?

Please help me and guide me..............

Hey. Really helpful info as i am struggling with the same.
My car was running fine , parked it at night.
Started in morning and SERVICE ABS ,SERVICE ESC and SERVICE ELCTRONIC THROTTLE BODY lights on DASH.
Do u think i have similar issue and changing battery will fix it ?
My battery has died 6-7 times due to a parasitic draw earlier.
