Trunk liner needs to be removed; do it carefully with a two pronged fork or something similar and the plastic doo-dads should pop out eventually. There's about eight of them. Remove the liner and you should be able to see the connection without taking anything else out and check/test it.
You really only need to remove four of the plastic doo-dads, and pull the liner away a bit. No need to remove the entire liner. With the liner pulled down a bit, it is easy to access the two nuts holding the unit on, and pull it out of the trunk. You can then disconnect the connector. That would be my preference to monkeying around with it still installed in the trunk. However, each to their own.

My back up cam only works about half the time. Black screen with white/grey streaks.

So I took it to the dealer and of course it was working perfectly. The serv writer said no error codes were evident so there was nothing they could do.

It's a real PITA. Is he correct that a failing cam will thro an error code?

I did not get an error code any of the times I've checked while doing other stuff. Lately the camera was more non-functioning than functional. I went into the dealer for a 60k service and while they were at it asked them to take a look. While I expected a connection problem, they said the camera needed to be replaced. Maybe this was true or maybe they didn't care much because the warranty covered most of it, but it could have been true - no idea what the MTBF is on these but it's probably a commonly replaced item.

Seeing as I was already there, well, phooey - had them do it. You can definitely save money if a warranty is not in the cards for you anymore and you get one of those blue tool sets above- pretty cool.

I have a 2013 Chrysler 300C. The backup camera has failed to work for two weeks. I took it to the local Chrysler dealer where it has been serviced since I bought it for them in Nov 2013. For $89.95 they told me they tried it a whole bunch of times and it worked every time. Since I got it back it now works intermittently. To me it feel like a switch isn't being made when I shift into reverse. Howver, I do get the "Check Entire Surroundings" message, then sometimes the camera works and sometimes the screen remains black. Does anyone else have this problem? I have 74k on this car.

My issue started today with "check entire surrounding" before this . The camera was showing everything on the opposite side. . Cars on my right showed they were on the left in the camera view..

This is how my camera acted just before they replaced it. It took 2 trips to the dealer as they are very reluctant to replace stuff till they can see it malfunction.

Mirror Image Issue

2012 Chrysler 300. For quite awhile had intermittent camera issues (probably every issue mentioned here) from snowy video at night, to horizontal (interference) lines, to completely blacked out yet still showing the green yellow red guide lines and check entire surrounds text, all of those problems happened randomly within the last couple of years and then randomly self resolved each time.

Fast forward to June 2019 and this new issue started happening, and is not yet showing any signs of resolving on its own. My camera no longer shows check surroundings or the guide lines, somewhat greyscale, and the picture is flip flopped (mirror image) showing left side on the right of the screen and vice versa. Before dropping $200+ on a new camera I'd like to know if the issue is with the camera itself or software. Electronic parts are not returnable.

Good grief! I believe the fiducial lines and nag message are inserted by the radio electronics. So if those are gone, your radio has issues. I've heard of the picture being mirrored, but have no clue why that might happen. Perhaps the radio thinks the backup camera is in front? In all cases, I doubt that a new camera will fix those issues. I call this a software issue, or a general radio hardware failure.

I had a camera issue with my 2013 and I got the camera replaced because it was glitching it would blackout say all that check surroundings and they put a new one in and I've had no issues but looking for a different part I found the backup camera for under a hundred bucks today. Do some researching on pricing.

The camera finally failed altogether and was replaced by the dealer

In my 2013 in the softkeys in Uconnect there's a "Display" button and in the settings you can change the screen brightness both for lights-on and lights-off (separately). Have you tried playing with that?

Chrysler 300c 2012 back up cam randomly stopped working....it goes back on at time but most of the time it gives me a black screen. Any fixes?
I have a 2015, Backup camera just started acting up, put in Reverse and it might or might work, Slamming the trunk usually makes it work. Now before I get in I go bang the trunk a couple of times.LOL I cant find the devise that tells the camera the trunk is closed.

Has anyone else had backup camera issues? Mine hasn't been working for about 2 weeks now. Screen just goes black and displays check entire surroundings. Every now and then it shows the display briefly then goes black. Any help? 51l miles on a 2012 limited
What was it that fixed your camera, I slammed my trunk and my camera went out. It has come on 3 times in 6 months.

after reading all this I think I will replace mine it has all the symptoms as everyone above typed and now it doesn't work at all, I found one at parts geek for under a hundred with free shipping.
I also noticed my third brake light is loose in the trunk I'm wondering if that's how the water got into it maybe from the car wash? I suppose I will replace that also.
not bad though for 2011

Not sure if anyone is still following this thread but has replacing the camera pretty much solved the black screen issue? I am having the black screen with the check surrounding message. I purchased another camera and installed but didn't solve the problem, getting ready to return and try another with hopefully some luck. Just wonder if I should be troubleshooting something else.

0ts300c Ive been having the same problem. Ihave a 2014 Chrysler 300C. My original Camera started working off and on. So I went to the wrecking yard and got a used one. Same problem then it went completely black and always says check surroundings. So I thought maybe that one was bad also. Ordered a new one on Ebay. Installed it and nothing. Same black screen with the check surroundings. Ive played with the rear wires while someone in the car holding the brake pedal and car and reverse. But never got any picture. At this moment I’m stumped!

Mine is still not working, I did send the other back and ordered another from a different company both on Amazon and no change. I did notice something strange the other day after getting an oil change and TPM issue. Not sure if the shop unhooked my battery but some things were reset (Memory Seats, etc) and they turned my lights from Auto on. The next morning I went out and didn't realize the headlights were not on, dash was bright as heck :). When I had the car in reverse the screen had a bright glow instead of the blank dark screen I have been seeing and don't recall seeing the check surrounding message. Now I wonder if it's something wrong with the screen itself.
